Making fragrance last in Australia's climate
Heat and humidity make fragrance bloom faster and fade sooner. Apply to moisturised skin, favour the chest and the back of the neck over the wrists, and let the scent settle rather than rubbing it in.
In summer, choose fresh, citrus and aquatic scents; in autumn and winter, reach for amber, vanilla, leather and oud.

How do I make my perfume last longer?
Apply to clean, moisturised skin straight after a shower, on pulse points like the neck, chest and inner elbows. Don't rub it in. A spray on clothing also holds scent longer than skin.
Where should I spray cologne?
Spray the sides of the neck, the chest and the wrists, from about 15 centimetres away. In hot weather, favour the chest under a shirt so the scent rises gently through the day.
How many sprays of cologne should I use?
Two to four sprays for most fragrances. Use fewer for strong oud and amber scents or in warm, humid weather, and a little more for fresh citrus colognes that fade faster.
What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de toilette?
Concentration. Eau de parfum usually contains around 15 to 20 per cent perfume oils, eau de toilette around 5 to 15 per cent. Higher concentration generally means a richer, longer-lasting scent.
What is the difference between cologne and perfume?
Technically, eau de cologne is a light concentration. In everyday language, cologne usually means a fragrance marketed to men and perfume one marketed to women — but anyone can wear either.
What is a hybrid fragrance?
A hybrid fragrance blends the character of two different fragrances into one original scent — like layering two favourites, balanced by a perfumer into a single bottle.
How do I layer perfumes?
Start with the heavier scent — woods, amber or vanilla — then add a lighter one such as citrus or florals on top. Keep to two fragrances that share a note so they blend rather than clash.
How do I choose a signature scent?
Start with fragrances you already love and notice what they share — fresh, sweet, woody or smoky. Test on skin, not paper, and live with it for a day before deciding.
What is the best fragrance for hot weather in Australia?
Fresh, citrus, aquatic and light floral scents perform best in heat and humidity. Apply lightly, and save heavy oud, amber and gourmand fragrances for cooler evenings.
What are top, heart and base notes?
Top notes are what you smell first and fade within minutes. Heart notes form the character for the next few hours. Base notes, like woods, musk and amber, last longest.
What do sillage and projection mean?
Projection is how far a fragrance radiates from your skin. Sillage is the trail it leaves behind as you move. Both depend on the fragrance, the dose and the weather.
Why can't I smell my own perfume after a while?
It's called olfactory fatigue: your nose stops registering a smell it's constantly exposed to. Others can usually still smell it, so resist the urge to re-spray.
How should I store perfume?
Keep it cool, dark and dry — in its box, away from sunlight and the bathroom's heat and humidity. Stored well, most fragrances keep their character for years.
Does perfume expire?
Most perfumes don't have a strict expiry date, but light and heat slowly change them. If the top notes smell sour or flat, the fragrance has aged.
What is oud?
Oud, or agarwood, is a dark, resinous material formed in Aquilaria trees. It smells woody, smoky and leathery, and is treasured in Arabian perfumery.
How do I test a perfume properly?
Spray on your wrist, wait at least 20 minutes, and smell it again after a few hours. A fragrance changes on skin, so judge the heart and base, not only the first spray.
